Adapted from the original 2001 motion picture directed, created, and penned by Baz Luhrmann, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a live stage adaptation of the same romantic tale focused on Christian, an American composer, and Satine, the Moulin Rouge venue star entertainer. The film to stage musical, which premiered at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in less than a decade ago, attempts a fresh perspective by expanding on the the 2001 motion picture, especially with musical arrangements, with over 70 arrangements attributed to 161 writers and composers reaching the actual premiere on the live stage.

In 2019, premiering at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 film Moulin Rouge was modified into the now-famed live staging in Broadway. Originally written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, it was performed beautifully by award-winning cast members including Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who embodied the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and creative experts including director Alex Timbers and music scoring and medleys by Justine Levine, behind the main stage.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a show full of young passion, love, and loss that touches on all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the turn of the 20th century and at the height of Bohemianism, during the span of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, searches for his big career break. He hopes to start a chance to succeed as a writer and travels to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new acquaintances, Lautrec and Santiago, who tell him to write a musical that they can flaunt. It is in the hidden world of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the entertainer of the the infamous nightclub that captures his attention. Their forbidden romance however encounters a difficult challenge in the persona of the boastful and greedy Duke of Monroth, who is pledged Satine by the nightclub’s promoter Harold Zidler, in agreement for a substantial financial trade-off to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So starts Christian and Satine’s struggle for love on the live stage.
Basically a love story that remains sweet and praiseworthy even now, the musical is also a mixture of both ballads and pop music, incorporating songs not just from the 2001 film, but also performance mash-ups and arrangements from modern songs that were woven into the creative direction of Moulin Rouge.
