Oklahoma, theatergoers have to get ready for one of the leading representations to Shakespeare’s most famous work! Giving new meaning to 'contemporary' and founded on one of the awesome classical works of all time, the brand new comedy play, & Juliet, is coming to the live stage on Thursday 1st May 2025 and to be held in Thelma Gaylord PAT At Civic Center Music Hall of Oklahoma City.
From the perspective of the main female protagonist of Shakespeare's original play, ‘& Juliet’ changes the original's ending in which Juliet decides to take a different path after she loses the love of her life and Juliet's profound learning of the other joys in life she didn't know about for the duration of her journey to Paris, France. In her journey, our main lead meets both previous friends and brand new acquaintances that were not part of the original script. Building on the original with contemporary themes, the musical revives the late tragedy and finds a way to entertain even young viewers.

Set side by side with the former known story of the Shakespearean play which was shown live on stage around four centuries earlier, fans have distinguished the many modifications which were implemented to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more recent show based on the same female lead. Shakespeare’s original plot revolves around the tragic ending that comes about because of rash decision-making and the unbridled passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic events and instead embraces a more positive outlook by embracing on the endless possibilities of life, even after such painful experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new musicall’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her circle of friends, who travel to Paris and find their identities not just as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist view through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes command of her husband’s tale and alters the ending of his well-known classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a chance to shine, while adding new and equally capable women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the production is able to incorporate popular culture, specifically songs from recent generations, that depict the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the show. Even the costumes worn by the show’s ladies give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while conveying the contrast between the ongoing production and the previous classic by pairing Elizabethan costumes and iconography with today’s costume styles. Each aspect of the show was carefully thought-out to celebrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
