History
The 1904 original production that influenced the musical rendition plunged into tricky concepts of boring adult responsibilities versus imaginative childhood innocence. The musical plays out with similar elements while bringing a fresh enchantment and modern flair compared to the 1954 original, which still won a Tony Award the following year.
Iconic actress Mary Martin’s leading performance is an important part of the musicals widespread success. Her groundbreaking role as Peter Pan was a testament to progress for that time. The show continued snagging Tonys and a Drama Desk award for over a decade. The 1960 film recording would also memorialize the story and bring the musical to TVs at home.
