Thelma Gaylord Performing Arts Theatre Information

Thelma Gaylord Performing Arts Theatre is an interesting concept. It is a “building within a building” that stands inside what was the original Municipal Auditorium and now serves as the centerpiece of the Civic Center Music Hall in Oklahoma City. So the history of Thelma Gaylord PAT is the history of the Civic Center Music Hall itself.

The Civic Center Music Hall opened in 1937 under its original name of the Municipal Auditorium. It was built under the Civic Center Project to serve the performing arts needs of the community of Oklahoma City. 30 years later, in 1967, the Municipal Auditorium experienced what they call “The deal of the century” where the Thelma Gaylord PAT was built within the old Auditorium, and the Civic Center Music Hall was built around it.

The Civic Center went on to enjoy another 30 years of high-quality performances, events, and extravaganzas until 1997 when it underwent another major renovation. The renovation was part of the MAPS I Project and was focused to transform the music hall into one of the best acoustic halls in the United States. The result of this renovation became the five-story open-air atrium that comes complete with double-light and sound-lock doors, and an advanced stage that is only rivaled in acoustics by some of the top music halls in the world.

Sitting in Oklahoma City’s bustling downtown district, the venue plays a pivotal role in the city’s dedication to the arts. Its complementary surroundings offer a dynamic mixture of culture, entertainment, and dining options, which is perfect if you want to extend your trip that little bit longer.

As for the décor? The theater’s design blends timeless elegance with modern functionality, creating an atmospheric environment for both audiences and performers alike. Its distinctive Art Deco style plays homage to the era in which the venue was originally constructed – the late 1930s – while its high-quality sound production and big stage make it a good home for large productions.

Thelma Gaylord PAT is now capable of seating 2,477 audience members and plays host to everything from Broadway productions to fashion shows, to graduations, and more.

History of Thelma Gaylord Performing Arts Theatre

The building that now houses the Thelma Gaylord Performing Arts Theatre was originally constructed as part of the larger Oklahoma City Civic Center complex. The Civic Center Music Hall, as it was known at the time, opened in 1937, designed by the prominent architectural firm Atkinson & Associates.

The building was part of an ambitious city-wide effort to create a civic center that would serve as a hub for cultural, political, and social activities. The structure’s design reflected the Art Deco style popular during that era, with clean lines, geometric shapes, and luxurious finishes. It was an immediate symbol of Oklahoma City’s civic pride and cultural aspirations.

The civic center continued its reign for another 30 years, where theatergoers enjoyed high-quality performances and extravaganzas until 1997. The building then underwent a major renovation as part of a project to transform the music hall into one of the best acoustic halls in the country.

It was renamed the Thelma Gaylord Performing Arts Theatre in honor of Thelma Gaylord, a philanthropic leader who had made significant contributions to the arts in Oklahoma City. The name change was part of a broader effort to revitalize the center and increase its visibility as a premier cultural venue. Thelma Gaylord, who was a passionate supporter of the arts and a key figure in the growth of Oklahoma City’s cultural landscape, was instrumental in securing funds for the renovation and modernization of the facility.

Since its reopening, the Thelma Gaylord Performing Arts Center has become a central hub for the performing arts in Oklahoma City. It is home to several key organizations, including the Oklahoma City Ballet, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and the Oklahoma City Repertory Theatre. The venue also hosts national and international touring productions, including Broadway performances and concerts by renowned artists. The center’s role as a gathering place for artistic expression has contributed to the city’s reputation as a cultural destination.

Since its construction decades ago, many a high-profile band has played at the music hall. But one of the most notable performances at the auditorium to date is the appearance of rock band KISS, who graced the stage in 1976.

Another interesting detail about the venue is its superb acoustics and hydraulic orchestral pit. These factors are just part of what makes the theater one of the best entertainment venues in the country.
