Founded on the late 2001 film directed, produced, and co-written by Baz Luhrmann, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a live stage adaptation of a tale of two secret lovers focused on Christian, an American writer, and Satine, the Moulin Rouge venue star entertainer. The Broadway musical, which started at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in less than a decade ago, takes a new repackaging by broadening on the the 2001 motion picture, especially with musical arrangements, with over 70 numbers attributed to 161 composers reaching the actual premiere on the live stage.

In 2019, first showing at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 film Moulin Rouge was modified into the well-loved live staging in Broadway. Originally produced by Baz Luhrmann, it was performed beautifully by famous cast members including Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who originated the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and the creatives including director Alex Timbers and music arrangements and creations by Justine Levine, behind the main stage.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is an adaptation exemplifying the triumph of love against odds that presents to us all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the turn of the 20th century and at the peak of Bohemianism, during the period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, looks for his dream and inspiration. He hopes to set in motion a successful career as a writer and moves to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new acquaintances, Lautrec and Santiago, who tell him to pen a musical that they can flaunt. It is in the hidden world of the Moulin Rouge nightclub where he meets Satine, the performer of the Moulin Rouge that he wishes to get to know more. Their budding relationship however meets a haughty competitor in the person of the rich and powerful Duke of Monroth, who is pledged Satine by the nightclub’s promoter Harold Zidler, in agreement for a considerable financial expenditure to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So begins Christian and Satine’s secret and tragic love affair on the live stage.
Essentially a love affair that remains sweet and praiseworthy even now, the musical is also a mixture of both ballads and pop music, incorporating numbers not just from the original film adaptation, but also performance mash-ups and medleys from new songs that were injected into the narrative of the musical.
