A tale of two falling in unlikely love, Moulin Rouge! The Musical shares with us a classical tale of romance in the equally romantic city of Paris, France. In the underbelly of Montmartre, Christian, a motivated composer who journeys in Montmartre with the goal of achieving his dreams, meets the would-be love of his life and star performer, Satine, in the nightclub Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine then start to have romantic encounters, but in secret, as another affluent patron sets his eyes on Satine as his muse.
Being a stage adaptation that was staged more than a decade after the late movie, Moulin Rouge! The Musical’s early challenge was to keep a relatively old plot relevant to a new audience. The genius stroke of the team, just like the 2001 film, was to tell the secret romantic affair with alternate and fresh renditions of anachronistic popular numbers. The obvious solution was to expand the musical numbers and truly make the show into a “jukebox musical with a difference”, as the production team refer to it. The product, as seen on the Broadway stage, was a melting pot of spectacular medleys, mash-ups, and renditions. Though the musical stays true to several of the original picture's favorite songs including Lady Marmalade, the hit musical now has pop hits from the recent decade including Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, Beyonce’s Single Ladies, and Britney Spears’ Toxic among so many other pop songs.
